For my remediation I chose to write a speech introducing Serena to winning ESPN’s 2015 Sportsperson of the Year

Hello and Thank you all for joining us this evening.

I am humbled with the honor to present our 2015 Sportsperson of the Year.

I say sportsperson to emphasize the gender neutrality of this award. While our headlines may be dominated by male athletic accomplishments, the world is not.

Our sportsperson of the year has dedicated her life to the sport of tennis. She has not lived a conventional life. She was raised in Compton, not where most tennis players come from. She has had to be strong mentally and physically.

She overcame racism and sexism to be the reigning champion in the tennis world for a decade now. She faces endless scrutiny from the media but has continued her domination.

A few years ago, at one of our country’s own tennis tournaments, the crowd completely abandoned her. They relentlessly booed her and wanted her to fail. Many people would be scared of that; would take time off from the sport and mentally recharge. But not this woman. She has used these hateful acts as a way to motivate herself.

I can think of nobody more deserving than Serena Williams
