Reflection

The first assignment that we worked on in this class was this repurposing. I took a paper that I wrote for my Sports and Race History class from last semester. The paper was a short research essay involving Serena Williams, sexism and racism. These themes are relevant to her personal and professional life.

I knew I wanted to repurpose this because I wrote it strictly to meet the guidelines; it was not particularly interesting or fun to read.

I was not too happy with my first draft of this assignment. It lacked any visual elements, and failed to tie everything. It almost seemed pretty pointless and that the reader wouldn't enjoy reading it. After much feedback I decided to elaborate on parts where I  could make it more of a narrative. I extended on her Indian Wells experience and her social influence.

My favorite part about my final product is engaging with visuals. I incorporated the visuals in the final draft and really think they add so much more to the experience. It adds so much being able to see images and comparisons while reading the text.

The biggest struggle of this was trying to write like a magazine. I wasn't sure how much of the original essay to include and how to manipulate the tone to more casual. Finding your voice as a writer is one of the biggest struggles and this assignment highlighted that.
